Following Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) guidelines, Mattacheese Middle School changed the lunch structure to improve supervision and maximize positive social experiences for all students. This new structure allows teachers to address student needs and better track behaviors. Prior to the Thanksgiving break, the students chose the 8 students with whom they wanted to sit. The location of the tables was assigned.
Fresh air time changed to a walk and talk which afforded students more time outside in a larger area. Walking facilitates appropriate social interaction. It also promotes healthy, socialization with peers outside of their core friend group. As always, students can choose to stay in the cafeteria or go outside.
PBIS is also known as the Dolphin Way. It is used in all of the D-Y schools using guidelines that best respond to student age and maturity. Since this new structure was implemented we have seen positive results both in the cafeteria and outside. It maximizes routine, structure and predictability. We want the lunch experience to be a warm and welcoming environment for all of our students.
